ICC Votes to Include Residential Sprinklers in Building Code

9/21/2008 - On Sunday, Sept. 21 at the International Code Council (ICC) meeting in Minneapolis, a provision was passed to include in the 2009 International Residential Code (IRC) a requirement for residential sprinklers in all one- and two-family dwellings. Although this will be included in the 2009 IRC, the effective date of this requirement is Jan. 1, 2011. This means that all jurisdictions adopting the 2009 code unchanged will require fire sprinklers in all homes beginning in 2011.

Of course not all jurisdictions adopt the latest building code quickly, and we can count on the opponents of fire sprinklers to either attempt to delay implementation on the local level, or attempt to remove this requirement before local adoption - BUT this is a major step forward in saving lives and reducing the fire threat. About 80 percent of lives lost in fire in the U. S. occur in home fires.

This major step forward in life safety is largely attributable to efforts of the many forward-thinking leaders in the fire service, as well as life safety organizations and coalitions including the National Fire Protection Association, Operation Life Safety/Residential Fire Safety Institute, Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition, IRC Fire Sprinkler Coalition and others with whom AFSA is proud to have worked over many years.
