South Dakota hotel fire extinguised by single sprinkler
2/3/2010 - Fire crews responded to a structure fire at the Quality Inn & Suites in Sioux Falls, S.D. The fire had been extinguished by the activation of a single fire sprinkler from the sprinkler system protecting the building.

Pennsylvania builders to fight sprinkler requirement
2/3/2010 - The state has adopted a new building code, part of which requires new homes to be equipped with fire sprinkler systems. The Pennsylvania Builders Association is fighting back. It filed a lawsuit last week asking for an injunction to stop the new code, which took effect January 1.

Welsh Assembly votes for mandatory sprinklers in new homes
2/3/2010 - Welsh Assembly members voted to make the installation of sprinklers compulsory in all new homes in Wales. A legislative competency order (LCO) introduced by Labour assembly member Ann Jones, has received the backing of cross-party committees in Wales and in Westminster. The measure now needs to be formally approved in both houses of the Westminster parliament before gaining royal assent.

Fire deaths in Massachusetts at lowest level since '40s
2/3/2010 - The number of people killed by fire last year dropped to the lowest level in Massachusetts since World War II, a testament to investment in public health and safety and to vigilance on the part of the public, according to state Fire Marshal Stephen D. Coan. To reduce the loss of life even further, Coan says he wants to push his state to embrace fire sprinkler systems in new residential developments.

Sprinklers prevent heavy damage at New Jersey diner
2/2/2010 - A Brick, N.J., diner was spared heavy damage when a sprinkler system was able to suppress a fire that started in a grease bucket. It is the second time this month a business in the area has been spared extensive fire damage because of properly functioning sprinklers.

North Carolina apartment complex saved by sprinklers
2/2/2010 - The South Hill, N.C., Volunteer Fire Department responded to an E-911 call about a fire at a Pinewood Forest apartment in South Hill. South Hill Volunteer Fire Department Administrator Jon Taylor said the fire was caused by food that had been left on the stove. He said the sprinkler system activated and put the fire out.

Fire Sprinkler Incentive Act Introduced in the Senate
1/26/2010 - On January 22nd, Senators Tom Carper (DE) and Susan Collins (ME) introduced the Fire Sprinkler Incentive Act in the Senate. This bill would amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to classify automatic fire sprinkler systems as 5-year property for purposes of depreciation. The bill, S. 2947, was referred to the Senate Finance Committee for consideration. Both Senator Carper and Senator Collins are co-chairs of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus.

Sprinklers assist in UConn dorm fire
1/27/2010 - More than 300 students in the Towers Residence Hall at the University of Connecticut were evacuated after a fire broke out in the basement. The fire was kept from spreading by the sprinkler system

Sprinkler saves Texas Goodwill store
1/27/2010 - A southwest Houston Goodwill store was spared from a fire at a shopping center, KPRC Local 2 reported. Fire reached a brick wall at the Goodwill store, triggering the sprinkler system. The store sustained minor water damage.
