Hilton Head, S.C. Code Change Seminars - May 7 & 8 5/7/2008 - According to The Island Packet, Hilton Head Island, S.C. will hold a seminar for contractors, architects and engineers next week to explain changes in the 2006 building codes that take effect July 1, 2008. The seminars will be May 7 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and May 8 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in council chambers at Town Hall. 05/07/2008 Code Changes OK'd by Tulsa, Okla. City Council 5/7/2008 - According to Tulsa World, the Tulsa, Okla. City Council May 1 approved changes to the Fire Prevention Code that requires installation of automatic sprinkler systems for at least 90 percent of their buildings' gross floor area, a calculation that includes stairwells and parking garages. Property owners in noncompliant commercial high-rise buildings have until 2020 to comply with the new mandate. 05/07/2008 Texas City Church Sprinkler Flap Heads to Federal Court 5/7/2008 - According to Houston television news station KHOU, a Texas City, Texas church will let a federal court harsh out if the city's Fire Marshal has the authority to require fire sprinklers be installed in day care facilities, such as the First Love Church center in question. The church is arguing its constitutional rights to due process have been violated and that the city's insistence on sprinklers violates federal protections against government rules that are arbitrary or capricious. 05/07/2008 First Homes in Johnson City, Tenn. Fully Sprinkled 5/7/8 - According to The Tri-Cities News, Johnson City, Tenn.'s only subdivision, equipped with fire sprinkler systems in all of its planned 191 homes, welcomed its first residents May 1. It's the latest trend in home fire prevention says the Johnson City Fire Marshal's Office, a fervent supporter of the growing movement. 05/07/2008 Five Injured in Overnight Lauderhill, Fla. Condo Fire 5/7/8 - According to Miami news station WTVJ, five people, including two firefighters, were injured and 18 displaced from their Lauderhill, Fla. condominium complex after one resident's art project broke out in flames May 6. Officials said that the building's old age and lack of a fire sprinkler system allowed the fire to spread quickly throughout the complex. 05/06/2008 AFSA Seminar Series Offered in Charlotte, N.C. Board May Revise Retrofit Ordinance 4/30/2008 - According to The Chicago Tribune, Hoffman Estates, Ill. trustees will consider revising an ordinance requiring some buildings to be retrofitted with fire-sprinkler systems, but they voted down a plan to give a Catholic elementary school more time to comply with the rules. 04/30/2008 Fire Sprinkler Rules Ignite Opposition in Douglas County, Nev. 4/30/2008 - According to The Reno Gazette-Journal, Douglas County commissioners voted last week to move ahead with an ordinance that would impose stricter building code regulations on homeowners at Lake Tahoe, Nev. New rules make it mandatory for homeowners in the Tahoe basin to install a fire sprinkler system if their home is 3,600 sq. ft. or larger. County commissioners now are refining the ordinance.
