Steve A. Muncy - AFSA President
Steve A. Muncy is President of the American Fire
Sprinkler Association (AFSA) based in Dallas, Texas. He joined the AFSA staff in 1988
and served as Executive Vice President for three years before being named
President in January 1992. As President, Muncy is the spokesperson
for AFSA and, in turn, for the open shop fire sprinkler industry. He
is in charge of the administration and management of the national headquarters
of AFSA as well as heading external relations with other industry associations
and internal relations with chapters and state associations.
Muncy serves on the Board of Directors of the Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition
and the National Advisory Committee of the Congressional Fire Services
Institute. He has also served on the Board of Directors of the National
Fire Protection Association (NFPA). He is a member of the American Society
of Association Executives and is a member and Past President of the Dallas/Fort
Worth Association Executives. He is a past board member and an active
member of the Texas Society of Association Executives. In 1992, he earned
a Certified Association Executive (CAE) designation and is one of only
2,500 worldwide to hold this certification.
Muncy is a graduate of the University of North Texas with a Bachelor
of Arts degree in Political Science.
Janet Knowles- AFSA Executive Vice President,
VP Marketing & Communications
Janet R. Knowles is the executive vice president of the Dallas-based American
Fire Sprinkler Association (AFSA) responsible for marketing and communications
and developing the communications strategy for the association. In addition,
she heads AFSA's communications team.
Knowles joined AFSA in 1989 as director of communications
and editor of Sprinkler Age magazine, the official publication of AFSA.
Three years later, her responsibilities were expanded to include publisher
of Sprinkler Age. In 2002, she was named vice president of marketing
and communications and in 2004, she was granted additional administrative
authority when she was promoted to executive vice president.
As executive vice president, Knowles is responsible
for serving as the Association's representative to several industry organizations
such as the Residential Fire Safety Institute. Additionally, she serves
on the National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA) Education Section's
Executive Board and is a volunteer steering committee member of the Home
Fire Sprinkler Coalition. She also continues her role as vice president
of marketing and communications. Knowles is an active member of NFPA,
American Society of Association Executives, and Texas Society of Association
Executives and she holds a bachelor of science's degree in Advertising/Public
Relations from Oklahoma State University.
Roland Huggins, P.E. - AFSA Vice
President of Engineering and Technical Services
Roland Huggins, P.E., is the vice president of Engineering and
Technical Services for the American Fire Sprinkler Association. He is a
graduate of the University of Maryland and registered in Fire Protection
Engineering. He is a member of the National Fire Protection Association
(NFPA) and the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE). Huggins is
a member of NFPA Standards Council and multiple NFPA technical committees,
including NFPA 13 Technical Correlating Committee, NFPA 13 Discharge Criteria,
NFPA 25, and NFPA 5000 (Building Code) Technical Correlating Committee.
NFPA activities have included participating on the editing of the Sprinkler
Handbook and the Fire Protection Handbook. Other national activities
involve the NFPA Research Foundation, UL Standard Technical Panels, NICET,
and SFPE. He has conducted many seminars and presentations as well as
written numerous sprinkler-related articles. Huggins is a Vietnam-era
veteran.
