Just a few months ago, James M. “Jim” Shannon, president and chief executive officer of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), watched in dismay as a house that had once belonged to his grandparents, where his mother grew up and he spent many hours visiting as a boy, was destroyed by fire.
