Seismic Bracing: 2016 Edition Update

Seismic Bracing: 2016 Edition Update
The code cycle for the 2016 edition of NFPA 13 contains numerous changes to seismic protection requirements.  This seminar will provide information and an opportunity to discuss the pending changes.

The 2016 edition of NFPA 13 contains modifications in the requirements for seismic protection of fire sprinkler systems.  Some of the revisions are editorial in nature, while others result in significant challenges to the designer and contractor. Those changes include clarification on allowable omission of lateral bracing, lowered capacity of post installed anchors in concrete, pipe stand design applications, an expansion of the seismic coefficient table, and clarification of long riser nipple issues.  This webinar will provide a brief overview of the changes.

Upon completion of this seminar, the attendee should be able to:

  • Discuss revisions to seismic protection for sprinkler systems
  • Understand the complexity of evaluating anchors in concrete.
  • Accurately perform the three separate prying factor calculations for brace hardware
  • Identify the four unique dimensions for brace hardware
  • Compare the interaction of brace angles and fastener capacity.
  • Employ the term “cracked concrete” and how it applies to fire sprinkler systems
  • Determine the required section modulus for pipe stands, and identify when a structural engineer must certify their construction.
  • Identify the requirements for omission of lateral bracing for branch lines and mains supported with short rods (< 6” in length), and interpret the two new figures explaining this section.
